National weightlifter Aniq Kasdan narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the men’s 61kg weightlifting event at the Paris Olympics after falling just one kilogramme short of the bronze medal winner.

Aniq finished fourth with a total lift of 297kg, with America’s Hampton Morris claiming bronze with a total lift of 298kg.

China’s Li Fabin defended the gold medal he won at the last Olympics in Tokyo with a total lift of 310kg, while Thailand’s Theerapong Silachai took home silver with a total lift of 303kg.

Aniq completed the snatch round with a lift of 130kg – a new national record – and lifted 167kg in the clean and jerk.

His attempt to secure a podium position with a 174kg lift was unsuccessful.

The previous snatch record in the weight class was 129kg, which was set by Aznil Bidin at the 2023 World Championships in Riyadh.
