PETALING JAYA:
Sabah’s cultural and lion dance community is mourning the death of lion dance performer Hambali Latip, 24, who died on May 1 after a training accident left him in a coma for about four months.

The member of the Sandakan Leong Sin Sports Association, who served as the tail performer in lion dance routines, fell during a practice session and suffered serious neck injuries, according to The Star.

News of his death was shared by the “Liondoncefreak” Facebook page, which said Hambali was a gifted athlete who won numerous awards with his team nationally and internationally.

His last public performances included those at the Malaysia Lion King Championship 2025 at Pavilion Bukit Jalil in early January.

Conveying his condolences to Hambali’s family, Tanjong Papat assemblyman Frankie Poon said his dedication to preserving Chinese traditional culture, despite not being ethnically Chinese, was a powerful symbol of unity.

“He showed us how culture transcends race and brings people together,” Poon said in a statement.

His aide, Liau Fui Fui, also conveyed heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the constituency office.

Wong Nyuk Leong, representing the association, presented a donation to Hambali’s family as a token of respect.
