In a Facebook post today, he said he had a telephone conversation with Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian about current developments in the Iran-Israel conflict.
Anwar said Masoud confirmed with him Iran’s willingness to halt military action and welcome peace on the condition that Israel stop its attacks on Palestine and Iran.
“He also asked for my help to deliver (his message) to other Muslim nations so they will not be influenced by one-sided narratives and can understand the true context of Iran’s response.
“In turn, I clearly stated Malaysia’s stance that we harshly condemn Israel’s attacks on Gaza and Iran that have killed both ordinary citizens and members of the military and scientific leadership of Iran.
“It is hypocritical for the world to acknowledge Israel’s strength and reject Iran’s right to defend itself,” he said.
Anwar said Malaysia welcomes Iran’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution with all parties, including the United States and Israel, so long as its conditions are met.
“Malaysia believes that a thorough resolution can be reached solely through negotiations and diplomacy, in efforts to avoid a protracted conflict,” he said.
Earlier today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel agreed to US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire with Iran after it achieved its goal of removing Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile threat.
Trump said a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was now in place and asked both countries not to violate it. Netanyahu also said Israel would respond forcefully to any violation of the ceasefire.
Hours after the ceasefire was announced, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran did not intend to continue its strikes if Israel stopped its attacks.
