State police chief Yusoff Mamat said the suspect was detained while buying petrol at a station in Tumpat.
He said the case has been referred to the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, and the suspect is also being investigated under the National Registration Act 1959.
“Police will study other appropriate legal provisions for action that can be taken against the suspect,” Berita Harian reported him as saying.
Yusoff also said there have been no cases of Malaysians attempting to smuggle diesel into Kelantan from Thailand.
“So far, no Malaysians have been arrested attempting to bring in diesel from across the border,” he said.
Diesel currently costs around 38 baht (RM4.82) per litre in Thailand, cheaper than the RM6.02 per litre locally.
