GEORGE TOWN:
Penang lost a local culinary legend today after Ang Kak Seong, the owner of a famous asam laksa stall in Air Itam, died this morning at the age of 77.

Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng shared the news of Ang’s death in a Facebook post.

“Deepest condolences to Ang’s family on the loss of their beloved father. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.

“We will miss the sight of him standing in front of his stall, serving customers hot and delicious laksa,” said Ng.

Ang’s Air Itam Market Laksa stall made headlines in recent years, after being featured on CNN’s World’s 50 Best Foods list in 2020, where Penang asam laksa was ranked seventh.

However, his business faced setbacks due to dwindling sales reportedly caused by Covid-19 and his son’s mounting debts.

This led him to close the stall, which was started by his parents and had been in operation for 66 years, on May 18, 2021.

Ang resumed his business in December that year following a six-month hiatus.
