PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will apply to Interpol for a red notice against former finance minister Daim Zainuddin’s two sons after they failed to turn up at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters to provide their statements today.

MACC said it viewed the no-show by Amir and Amin Zainuddin “seriously”, especially since their lawyers had agreed and promised that their clients would turn up to assist in an investigation.

“However, they once again failed to do so without any reasonable excuse,” it said in a statement this evening.

MACC said former lawyer Josephine Premla Sivaretnam, an alleged associate of Daim, also failed to appear at MACC’s headquarters today despite being instructed to do so.

It said she failed to provide a satisfactory reason for her absence.

MACC said the trio will face legal action under Section 48(c) of the MACC Act 2009, which makes it an offence to fail to comply with an order from an MACC officer to appear for a statement to be recorded.

“MACC stresses that any failure to comply with the lawful instructions of this agency will not be tolerated, and enforcement action will be carried out without exception,” it said.

Apart from the Interpol red notice, MACC also said it will work with the immigration department to restrict and monitor the trio’s movements.

An Interpol red notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action.

MACC said another of Daim’s sons, Wira Dani, had informed it earlier regarding his absence, while Daim’s daughter, Asnida, cooperated with MACC by providing its officers a statement today.

However, it confirmed that Asnida will be charged in court tomorrow under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act, which relates to failure to comply with an asset declaration notice issued by MACC.

The anti-graft agency previously issued a public search notice to trace Daim’s four children, all of whom were expected to have their statements recorded by MACC at its headquarters today.

MACC listed their last known residences in the public search notice, but did not disclose further details about their investigations.
