PETALING JAYA:
Twenty-two people are being investigated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allegedly spreading fake news online about the global energy crisis resulting from the Iran war.

MCMC said a total of 36 probe papers had been opened, and that the 22 people were questioned by officers in multiple locations across the country.

Six investigation papers have been referred to prosecutors for further action.

Investigations were conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities, which is punishable by a maximum RM500,000 fine, up to two years in prison or both, upon conviction.

“MCMC takes the misuse of social media and digital media platforms to mislead the public and spread false information very seriously.

“Stern action will be taken against anyone found breaching the laws,” it said in a statement.

MCMC previously said it was investigating more than 20 people over fake news on the global energy crisis, fuel price hikes, and electricity tariff hikes.
