Suspended police corporal claims trial to robbery

Lawyer says Irfan Azieyadi Abdul Aziz has been suspended since 2023 and now works as a labourer, earning up to RM50 a day.

A police corporal suspended from duty has claimed trial to charges of robbery and attempted robbery in the Kota Bharu sessions and magistrates’ courts.

Irfan Azieyadi Abdul Aziz, 45, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before judge Nik Habri Mohamad and magistrate Rais Imran Hamid, Harian Metro reported.

In the sessions court, Irfan was charged with robbing Nik Zainab Nik Zul Azhar, 34, at a sundry shop in Kampung Kemumin Jalan Sabak at around 10.30pm on Nov 7.

The charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code is punishable by up to 14 years in prison and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

In the magistrates’ court, he was charged with attempting to rob Rahman Ubaid at Jalan Tok Kenali, Kubang Kerian, at around 5.15pm on Nov 12.

The charge was framed under Section 393 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to seven years in prison or a fine.

Deputy public prosecutors Kamarul Hasyime Rosli and Nadzir Abdullah prosecuted while Irfan was represented by lawyers Ahmad ‘Adha ‘Amir Yasser Amri and Nur Sarah Syamimi Safie.

Nur Sarah told the courts that Irfan, a father of two, had been suspended as a cop since 2023. He now works as a labourer earning RM30 to RM50 a day.

The sessions and magistrates’ courts granted bail of RM10,000 and RM7,500, respectively.
