Girl dies after car hits duo in school compound

Police say the driver mistakenly stepped on the accelerator, causing the car to ram into two students outside a surau.

PETALING JAYA:
A Form 1 student was killed and another  injured when they were hit by a car in their school compound in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, today.

Kota Bharu police chief Azmir Damiri said a report about the  crash at SMK Tanjung Mas was received at about 2.15pm, Bernama reported.

He said the accident occurred when the driver mistakenly stepped on the accelerator causing the car to ram into the girls who were outside a surau.

“The crash happened at around 1.50pm when the female driver mistakenly stepped on the accelerator, crashing into two girls who were believed to be putting on their shoes outside the surau.

“One girl died at the scene from severe head injuries, while the other is being treated for severe injuries at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital,” he was quoted as saying.

The driver was unhurt.

Azmir said the girl’s body was sent to Universiti Sains Malaysia’s specialist hospital in Kubang Kerian for an autopsy.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
