KUALA LUMPUR:
Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir has urged private universities to ensure cafeteria operators do not raise food prices excessively amid concerns over students’ cost of living.

He said the ministry had informed private institutions to consider current economic conditions and the financial situation of students, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds.

Cafeteria operators in universities have been told not to increase their prices, he said at a Celik Madani event at Menara Merdeka 118 here today.

Zambry said some operators were charging market rates without considering students’ circumstances, particularly in private educational institutions.

“Certain cafeterias at private universities do not take into account the less fortunate students and still charge the normal market price,” he said.

He called on public universities to continue monitoring food prices.

Efforts are being made to expand affordable food options on campuses, with the introduction of the “Menu Kasih Siswa” initiative.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Zambry had met representatives from the National Student Consultative Council to discuss strategies the government could implement to mitigate the impact of potential increases in living costs, including food and other daily necessities.

He also said his ministry is exploring measures to help students and academics manage the financial pressures sparked by the global energy crisis.
