PETALING JAYA:
The office of the agriculture and food security minister has filed a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) over a doctored image claiming that its minister, Mohamad Sabu, encouraged civil servants to grow cannabis at home.

In a Facebook post, the minister’s office said the claim was defamatory, untrue, and could mislead the public.

“Accordingly, an official report has been submitted to MCMC for investigation and further action against those involved.

“The public is advised not to share false content and to rely on official channels for accurate information,” it said.

The minister’s office also shared a screenshot of the social media post, which featured an image of Mohamad alongside cannabis plants with the caption: “Mat Sabu suggests civil servants start growing cannabis at home following the conflict in West Asia”.

The post itself included a disclaimer noting that the cultivation and use of cannabis is prohibited under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable by imprisonment, whipping, and fines.

Last month, Mohamad ordered his ministry’s officers to plant their own crops, saying there was no sign that the conflict involving Israel, the US, and Iran would end soon.
