PETALING JAYA:
Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan has urged the government to implement a six-month moratorium on MyKiosk rent to ease the burden on small traders grappling with rising operating costs.

He said micro-entrepreneurs were facing mounting challenges due to higher fuel prices, logistics expenses, and raw material costs, all of which were eroding already thin profit margins.

“Last week, I met small traders in Tasek Gelugor, and they told me their already modest earnings are being further squeezed amid economic uncertainty,” he said in a Facebook post.

Wan Saiful added that the proposal would carry limited fiscal implications for the housing and local government ministry, which oversees the MyKiosk initiative.

“There are about 7,243 kiosk units with a total development cost of around RM150 million, while monthly rent ranges between RM200 and RM300.

“If the moratorium is implemented, the cost to the government is estimated at between RM8.6 million and RM13 million – potentially lower given that occupancy is not at full capacity,” he said.

He said the amount was relatively small compared to the overall cost of the MyKiosk project, but could provide meaningful relief for thousands of small traders.

Wan Saiful said it would also help improve cash flow for micro-businesses and stabilise their operations in a challenging economic environment.

Launched in 2023, the MyKiosk initiative aims to provide traders with a safe and comfortable space to operate their businesses, and to improve the image of roadside stalls.
