Ayer Keroh sessions court judge Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin meted out the sentence after Fairus Abdullah pleaded guilty, Bernama reported.
Fairus was charged with attempting to kill Esmal Fhahmie Abd Malek, 40, by swinging the kerambit at the policeman with the intention of causing his death at Batu 6 Lereh, Tanjung Kling, Melaka, around 1am on April 11.
The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code which provides for up to 10 years in prison and whipping upon conviction.
Fairus was also sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to possession of a dangerous weapon in a public place under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which allows for between five and 10 years in jail and whipping if convicted.
The judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest.
According to the case facts, Fairus was holding the kerambit and a screwdriver when Esmal approached and introduced himself as a police officer.
Esmal asked him to surrender but Fairus refused and said: “I will kill any policeman who tries to arrest me.”
Fairus then swung the kerambit at the police officer. However, he dropped the weapon after a warning shot was fired in the air.
Later, in the magistrates’ court, the man pleaded guilty to three charges of criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt and obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duties.
Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani sentenced him to seven months in prison for each charge but ordered the jail terms to run concurrently from the date of his arrest.
