PETALING JAYA:
The Attorney-General’s Chambers will prosecute one person in court and issue compounds to five others for spreading false claims about fuel price hikes linked to the Middle East conflict, says the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The commission said the compounds were RM25,000 each and the AGC had also issued warning letters in four other cases. The case to be prosecuted will be heard in the Sepang sessions court.

MCMC said all actions were taken under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities, which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both.

“The public is reminded to use digital platforms responsibly and not spread content that can jeopardise harmony and public peace,” it said in a statement.

Earlier today, Bernama reported communications minister Fahmi Fadzil as saying MCMC had identified 450 posts containing false information related to the global energy crisis from March 29 to 7am today.

He said of the total, 299 posts had been taken down by social media platform providers.

Fahmi said MCMC had requested the takedown of 147 posts related to the Strait of Hormuz, and that 122 of them had been taken down as of this morning.

He said 57 investigation papers had also been opened so far, with one case to be prosecuted soon.
