SHAH ALAM:
The Selangor government has unveiled a RM130.42 million economic package in light of the economic fallout from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The package, announced by menteri besar Amirudin Shari today, seeks to bolster the state’s food security, reduce the people’s cost of living, control inflation, boost public transport uptake, and distribute targeted aid to the needy.

Some RM50 million will be allocated to boost Selangor’s food stockpile, comprising RM25 million from the state government and RM25 million from the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS).

To support farmers and fishermen, RM25 million will be allocated to cover the rise in fuel costs or agricultural input.

“Some 18,000 padi farmers will receive RM500 for every hectare of land for each season, while 2,000 fishermen will get RM300 a month for six months due to the rise in diesel costs,” Amirudin said at a press conference here.

“For aquaculture farmers, RM450 a month will be channelled for six months so that they can cover the agricultural input costs and prevent a hike in cost of goods. Some RM25 million has been allocated for this from June.”

The state government will also give out RM100 “Kita Selangor” vouchers on a monthly basis for a period of six months to 50,000 eligible people in Selangor.

“This is to prevent anyone from living in hardcore poverty if they suffer from job cuts or loss in income this year. For this initiative, RM30 million has been allocated,” Amirudin said.

To encourage public transport use, 50,000 Selangor folk will receive RM30 a month until the end of the year which can be spent on on-demand vans, buses, or trains.

The state government has allocated an additional RM5.4 million for this, meaning it has allocated a total of RM10.4 million for public transport initiatives under the state budget for 2026.

Some RM5 million will be allocated for PKPS to hold monthly Rahmah sales in every state constituency in Selangor, an initiative expected to benefit 168,000 households across the state.

Amirudin said this was an additional RM5 million on top of the RM10 million allocated for the initiative this year.

Free breakfasts will also be provided at all 873 government schools in the state, with local councils tasked with spearheading this initiative. Schools will receive the finances needed for this from August.

Amirudin said the economic effects of the Iran war were already apparent, and that they were not expected to ease in the short term.

Even if the war ends soon, affected sectors like oil and gas, fertiliser, sulphur, and helium will take at least a year to fully recover, he said.

“That is why we cannot take a wait-and-see approach but must prepare to face this situation for the long term,” he said.
