PETALING JAYA:
DAP’s Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki has stood by her proposal to allow modern, closed-system pig farming in Selangor.

Wong said the proposal was based on feedback from residents in her constituency, Sinar Harian reported.

“This is my duty as an assemblyman. Any issues related to the people, we bring to the state assembly,” she was quoted as saying.

Wong said she was prepared to face any action, including being referred to the rights and privileges committee over the matter.

“I have already raised it in the assembly. Other matters are not my responsibility, and I do not wish to comment further,” she said.

Wong faced criticism after raising the proposal during a debate on the Selangor sultan’s address, where she said the issue of pig farming touched on equality under Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution.

She argued that pig farming should not be singled out from other forms of livestock farming, as risks involving pollution, hygiene and public health are similar across all types of farming.

Wong also expressed regret that the issue had, in her view, been politicised by various parties.

The proposal has since triggered a motion by opposition lawmakers to refer Wong to the rights and privileges committee.

Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar has also called for Wong to be suspended for up to 12 months if her proposal is found to have contradicted a royal decree.

Separately, DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said that Wong’s proposal did not in any way disrespect the sultan’s wishes.

Instead, he argued, it offered constructive alternative solutions to the issue, which should not be dismissed outright for the reasons stated above.

“Under the circumstances, I am of the view that Wong was merely carrying out her duties as a state assemblyman and condemning her for doing so is certainly unnecessary and regrettable,” Ramkarpal, who is the party’s legal bureau chairman, said in a statement.
