KUALA LUMPUR:
Former Bernama sub-editor Teoh Hock Siew died yesterday at the age of 75. News of his death was shared on Facebook by Mustapha Kamil Janor, the former group managing editor of New Straits Times Press.

Teoh was a sub-editor with Bernama’s economics service for more than five years, after a long stint with Business Times. He also served a stint at The Edge.

Former Bernama editor-in-chief Yong Soo Heong described Teoh as “an interesting guy from Penang” who brought his unique personality into the newsroom.

“We were in the same Red Crescent squad after school. He later joined Business Times and then Bernama’s economics service, where he got the editing jobs done without much fuss, even in a bilingual setup,” he said, adding that Teoh’s “Penang ways” would be missed. Teoh was a former pupil of Penang Free School.

Mustapha said Teoh was already part of the Business Times’ sub-editors’ desk when he first joined the organisation. Teoh, together with another sub-editor, Teh Poh Chee, formed the backbone of the newspaper’s gatekeeping team, Mustapha said.

The wake will be held at Nirvana Centre Kuala Lumpur on April 27-28, with cremation at Nirvana Crematorium, Shah Alam, on April 29.
