Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said the ministry consistently looks into the welfare of university students affected by disasters such as the Kampung Bahagia fire.
“Soon after we were informed of the incident, I instructed the foundation’s CEO, Hirman Awang, to conduct checks. They identified eight university students affected by the blaze.
“I have also asked him to continue identifying similar cases that we were not informed of so that we can give the necessary aid to them,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Malaysia-Turkiye Education Forum 2026 at the campus.
The fire left 9,007 residents of Kampung Bahagia homeless.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has since announced RM1,500 in cash aid for the 300 affected families, channelled through the implementation coordination unit of the Prime Minister’s Department and the National Disaster Management Agency.
Separately, 454 school students affected by the fire have received RM300 in school assistance.
