Woman who brandished knife at water festival referred to Hospital Bahagia

A woman who brandished a knife at the Rain Rave Water Music Festival in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, has been referred to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta to undergo psychiatric evaluation for 30 days.

Shannon Anne-Ooi, 27, was charged this morning with carrying an offensive weapon in a public place for unlawful purposes under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

The charge is punishable by up to two years in prison and whipping, upon conviction.

Dang Wangi police chief Sazalee Adam said the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court ordered the accused to be sent to the psychiatric hospital for evaluation as it was suspected that she had mental health issues.

In a statement, he said the court fixed June 4 for case mention.

A video, which went viral, showed members of the public disarming a woman who had pulled out a knife during the music festival on Saturday night.

She was arrested by police before being remanded.
