DAP puts machinery on alert for snap polls in 3 states

Party secretary-general Loke Siew Fook says DAP is preparing for the possibility of state elections in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor.

DAP’s central executive committee held a meeting last night to discuss the Negeri Sembilan crisis and the possibility of snap state elections.
PETALING JAYA:
DAP has told its party machinery to prepare for the possibility of snap elections in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor, says secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.

The directive was among the resolutions passed at the party’s central executive committee (CEC) meeting last night, amid the possibility that the three state assemblies could be dissolved soon.

Negeri Sembilan’s state assembly term ends in August 2028 while Melaka and Johor are due to hold state elections by early and mid-2027, respectively, unless the assemblies are dissolved earlier.

Loke also said DAP would not agree to any proposal to change the Negeri Sembilan menteri besar following failed attempts to topple the unity government in the state.

He said the party pledged loyalty to the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, following the ruler’s decree for the state government under Aminuddin Harun to continue functioning as usual.

“DAP will continue to support and give its full backing to Aminuddin as Negeri Sembilan menteri besar,” he said in a statement.

Loke also said that DAP respected and upheld the constitutional monarchy.

“All issues involving the royal institution and adat pepatih must be resolved respectfully and in an orderly manner, in accordance with the federal and state constitutions,” he added.

The political crisis in Negeri Sembilan began after Mubarak Dohak, the former undang of Sungai Ujong, and three other undangs announced on April 19 that Tuanku Muhriz had been removed as Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

The state government rejected the declaration, saying Mubarak himself had been removed from his post the previous year.

On April 27, all 14 Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen withdrew support for Aminuddin, citing his handling of the royal dispute. BN briefly claimed it had enough support to form a new state government with the backing of five Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblymen.

However, Umno’s political bureau later decided to continue supporting the unity government in Negeri Sembilan while respecting the decision of the 14 assemblymen.

Two of PN’s five assemblymen have also backed away from calls to change the state government.
