PETALING JAYA:
A 43-year-old man pleaded not guilty at the Sungai Petani sessions court in Kedah today to two counts of causing grievous hurt to his wife in separate incidents in March and April.

Berita Harian reported that Rosmaini Abd Raof allegedly beat Nurfitri Moktar, 39, with a plastic chair and rubber hose at their home in Bandar Amanjaya at 5pm on March 29.

He is also accused of assaulting her with a curtain rod at the same location at 9am on April 23.

Rosmaini entered his plea after the charges were read to him before judge Najwa Che Mat.

The charges were framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine or whipping.

Kedah prosecution director Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim appeared for the prosecution while Rosmaini was represented by Ruzanna Abdul Rahim from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

The defence applied for bail, saying Rosmaini is responsible for supporting his two wives and 11 children, seven of whom are still in school.

However, Khairul informed the court that although the offences are bailable, Rosmaini is currently serving a sentence at Kajang prison.

The court denied Rosmaini bail and fixed June 16 for the next case mention.

Rosmaini was previously convicted of assaulting his then wife, Jahidah Nordin @ Sylvester, in May 2021 when she was 10 weeks pregnant. The assault left her in a coma for five years.
