PETALING JAYA:
A van driver pleaded not guilty at the magistrates’ court in Johor Bharu today to causing the death of a child in a road accident outside a primary school in Parit Sulong earlier this week.

Nordin Ithnin, 61, entered his plea after the charge was read out before magistrate Arun Noval Dass, Kosmo reported.

He was accused of recklessly driving a van, causing the death of eight-year-old Nur Aini Umairah Fareez, at about 12.30pm on April 5 in front of SK Seri Maimon.

The charge was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of between five and 10 years and a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM50,000, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan requested bail of RM10,000 with several additional conditions.

However, the National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer representing Nordin requested a lower bail amount, saying Nordin earns only RM1,800 a month.

The court set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and ordered Nordin to report to the police station each month. His driver’s licence was also suspended until disposal of the case.

The case is set for mention on June 25.
