Anwar announces extra RM50mil in funds for Mitra

The prime minister cites the agency's improved performance in channelling aid to the Indian community, bringing its total funding for 2026 to RM150 million.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will continue to uphold the principle of social justice regardless of race or background.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that an additional RM50 million has been allocated to the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) for this year.

This is on top of the RM100 million allocated to Mitra under the 2026 federal budget, bringing the agency’s funding for this year to RM150 million.

Anwar said the government decided to increase Mitra’s funding in light of its improving performance, especially in channelling aid to those among the Indian community who are sidelined or in poverty.

“If you ask me if the RM100 million allocation is sufficient (for Mitra), I would say that it’s not.

“But to say that it’s only RM100 million wouldn’t be true. Because of its good performance in the last quarter, I have agreed to increase Mitra’s funding (by RM50 million),” he said at an event with Indian students at Universiti Malaya today.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said his government would continue to uphold the principle of social justice regardless of race or background.

He said his administration’s aid programmes, which are aimed at eradicating poverty, have never been based on ethnicity but are targeted towards Malaysians in need.

Mitra, now under the human resources ministry, was under the Prime Minister’s Department before January.
