Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said the students were aged between 13 and 16, and police were working on identifying the remaining students seen in the video.
“We will ask those involved to come to the station to have their statements recorded,” Sinar Harian reported him as saying today.
“Whether we arrest them will depend on whether we deem it necessary. No arrests are being made for the time being.”
Hanyan said a report on the fight was lodged at the Bedong police station at 5.30pm yesterday. The incident is believed to have occurred between 1pm and 2pm on Wednesday.
“Two or three of the students involved suffered bruises. Acting on the first report, we have identified between six and 10 of the schoolgirls believed to be involved,” he said.
He said the fight was likely triggered by insults exchanged on social media.
The case is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code for affray, or fighting in public. The offence carries a penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment, a RM1,000 fine, or both, upon conviction.
