Afdlin denies offer to help Setiawangsa constituents politically motivated

Actor-turned-politician says he is merely a 'caretaker' to ensure that residents continue to receive assistance and representation following Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad's resignation.

PKR division leader Afdlin Shauki said party president Anwar Ibrahim has the final say on PKR’s candidates for the next general election.
PETALING JAYA:
A PKR division leader has denied that his offer to assist the constituents in Setiawangsa following the resignation of Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as their MP was politically motivated.

Afdlin Shauki said he only saw himself as a “caretaker”, to ensure that residents continue to receive assistance and representation.

The actor-turned-politician said the Federal Territories Residents Representative Council for Setiawangsa was the closest alternative to an elected representative.

“As its chairman, I assure the residents of Setiawangsa that we will continue to do our best to look after their welfare,” he told FMT.

Afdlin offered his services to Setiawangsa constituents yesterday following Nik Nazmi’s decision to vacate the parliamentary seat.

Social media users had asked if his offer was linked to preparations for the 16th general election.

However, Afdlin said party president Anwar Ibrahim had the final say on PKR’s candidates for the next nationwide polls.

Nik Nazmi, a former federal minister, resigned as an MP and quit PKR to take over Parti Bersama Malaysia, together with Rafizi Ramli who also stepped down as the Pandan MP.

At the party polls last year, Afdlin defeated Nik Nazmi in the divisional elections, winning the chairmanship by 631 votes to 563.
