PETALING JAYA:
A balloon and food seller claimed trial at the Sungai Petani magistrates’ court today to a charge of causing the death of a man in a helium tank explosion at an expo site last week.

Hasrul Nizam Abu Hasan, 38, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Saiful Akmal Razi, Kosmo reported.

He is accused of negligently causing the death of Azmi Ahmad, 42, by modifying and using a homemade helium gas tank that exploded at the Jam Besar expo site on Jalan Ibrahim at around 7.53pm on May 21.

Azmi, a beverage seller, died from severe chest injuries in the blast. Three others were also injured.

The charge was framed under Section 304A of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Adlin Sufiya Kamarulzaman proposed bail at RM10,000 with one surety.

However, defence counsel Adam Burhanudeen sought a lower amount, saying his client was the sole breadwinner for his family. He also cited the fact that Hasrul had no prior criminal record.

The court allowed bail of RM5,000 with one surety.

June 23 was set for case mention and document submission.
