KUNSHAN:
Indonesia advanced to the 2016 Thomas Cup final after they demolished South Korea 3-1 in the semi-final at Kunshan Sports Centre here today.

With the win, Indonesia’s quest to win back the prestigious cup is on track, ending a six-year wait for a shot at the title.

Indonesia last reached the Thomas Cup final in 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, but lost 0-3 to China.

Indonesia’s gamble on rising star Jonatan Christie as first singles player after the team decided to rest the seasoned Tommy Sugiarto, failed as he was blown off the court by Son Wan Ho, 10-21, 16-21.

The score was level at 1-1 after Indonesia’s world number two pair, Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan disposed world number one, Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong, 21-15, 21-12, in the second match.

Second singles player Anthony Ginting put Indonesia into a 2-1 lead after he beat Lee Dong Keung, 21-18, 21-18.

Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi then beat Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang, 21-15, 21-15 to wrap up the game and winning point for Indonesia to make it 3-1.

Meanwhile, China’s Uber Cup team salvaged some pride after their Thomas Cup team went down to South Korea 2-3 in the quarter-finals yesterday.

Top players Li Xuerui, Wang Shixian and doubles Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei romped to a 3-0 win over India in the semi-final which lasted about three hours.

Li and Wang Shixian who came onto court as the first and second singles, were stretched by opponents Saina Nehwal and Pusarla V.Sindhu, before winning two points for China.

Li beat Saina, 21-15, 12-21, 21-17 while Wang beat Pusarla, 21-13, 23-21.

Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei then clinched an easy win over scratch pair Jwala Gutta/Sikki Reddy Nelakurihi, 21-6, 21-6.
