Hockey World Cup: Malaysia mauled by Holland

The Malaysian team goes down 7-0 but it would have been worse if goalkeeper S Kumar had not saved five penalty corner shots.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia were whipped 7-0 by defending champions Holland in their opening Group D match of the 2018 Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, India, tonight.

Roelant Oltmans’s boys started off well and were able to keep the marauding Dutch at bay but it was not long before the floodgates opened.

The three-time champions scored thrice in the first half with Jeroen Hertzberger putting the ball in the back of Malaysia’s net in the 12th and 29th minutes while their 30-year-old captain Billy Bakker got his name on the score-sheet in the 21st minute.

The Speedy Tigers were overwhelmed but if it were not for star keeper S Kumar their opponents would have probably added five more, from penalty corners.

Mink van der Weerden scored via a penalty corner in the 35th minute followed by an easy field gold by Robert Kemperman in the 42nd minute.

Thierry Brinkman and Hertzberger then added to Malaysia’s misery with the sixth and seventh goals in the 57th and 60th minutes respectively.

Holland are ranked 4th in the world while Malaysia is in 12th position.

Malaysia’s best finish in the Hockey World Cup was fourth placing when the country played host in 1975.
