KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian men’s badminton squad was defeated 3-1 by Indonesia at the Badminton Asia Team Championship in Manila yesterday.
This is Indonesia’s second successive Asian team title after repeating their 2018 triumph in Alor Setar, Kedah.
World No 5 singles shuttler Anthony Sinisuka Ginting defeated Lee Zii Jia 22-20, 21-16 in 46 minutes to secure Indonesia’s first point.
Men’s doubles pair and world champs Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo contributed their second after defeating Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik 22-20, 21-16.
However, youngster Cheam June Wei gave Malaysia some hope after delivering a shock win over world No 7 Jonatan Christie in three games 21-16, 17-21, 24-22.
Indonesia though had no trouble securing the title after Mohammad Ahsan-Fajar Alfian won in straight sets 21-18, 21-17 over Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.
Malaysia’s only silver lining is that they had punched their Thomas Cup ticket after advancing to the semifinals in Manila.
The women’s team also booked their appearance in the Uber Cup after their bronze showing in the Philippines.
The Thomas and Uber Cups will be held in Aarhus, Denmark, in May.
