BIRMINGHAM:
The national diving squad finished the 2022 Commonwealth Games today with a bronze medal in the mixed synchronised 3m springboard.

The combination of Nur Dhabitah Sabri and Syafiq Puteh delivered a medal in the first-time Games event when they were placed third with 299.04 points after five dives at the Sandwell Aquatic Centre here.

The gold medal went to Scottish pair, James Philip Heatly-Grace Elizabeth Reid who amassed 306.00 points, while silver medalists Li Shixin-Maddison Keeney of Australia scored 304.02 points.

Another Malaysian duo, Gabriel Gilbert Daim-Wendy Ng Yan Yee were placed seventh with 273.06 points.

The bronze medal was Nur Dhabitah’s third in this Birmingham edition after garnering two silvers in the individual 3m springboard and the synchronised 3m springboard pairing with Wendy Ng.

Today’s bronze was the second medal for Syafiq after he clinched a silver in the men’s synchronised 3m springboard with Gabriel.

Nonetheless, the achievements of the diving squad with three silvers and one bronze were deemed as disappointing, when diving was targeted to contribute one gold to the national contingent in this Games.

When met by reporters, Nur Dhabitah said she was satisfied with her performance despite missing the gold.

“I am satisfied with the achievement after three consecutive days of action in the final. Today, I tried my best and we won a bronze medal,” she said.

She said after the Games in Birmingham, she will be focused on the 2023 Fina Grand Prix in Bukit Jalil in November.

Meanwhile, Syafiq said he was very satisfied with his achievement after only having the opportunity to train with Nur Dhabitah before his arrival in Birmingham.

“For a week here, we didn’t have a chance to train together because of the busy event schedule. Thank God, we were lucky to win bronze today,” he said.

Meanwhile, the pairing of Pandelela Rinong-Jellson Jabillin failed to win a medal for the national camp when they finished fourth in the mixed synchronised 10m platform after collecting 302.82 points.

England’s Noah Oliver Williams-Andrea Spendolini Sirieix won the gold medal after collecting 333.06 points, ahead of teammate Kyle Kothari-Lois Mae Toulson (318.54) in second place, while the bronze went to Australia’s Cassiel Emmanuel Rousseau-Emily Ann Boyd (309.60).
