NEW DELHI:
India said it test-fired missiles, showcasing its capability to hit distant targets, amid growing tension with Pakistan.

“Indian Navy ships undertook successful multiple anti-ship firings to re-validate and demonstrate readiness of platforms, systems and crew for long-range precision offensive strike,” the navy said in a post on X, without disclosing details on the missiles used.

Relations between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours deteriorated after 26 people were killed on Tuesday in an attack on an area in the Jammu and Kashmir region that is popular with tourists.

New Delhi has accused Pakistan of involvement and announced punitive measures against Islamabad, including downgrading diplomatic ties and suspending a crucial water-sharing treaty.

Pakistan has denied the charge, and in a tit-for-tat retaliation expelled diplomats from that country, closed its airspace to Indian-owned and operated airlines and halted the limited trade between the two nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reiterated that India will punish those responsible for killing the tourists in his monthly radio address to the nation.

“I once again assure the affected families that they will get justice, and justice will be done,” Modi said.
