JAKARTA:
Mount Dukono in eastern Indonesia erupted on Saturday, sending an ash column up to 1,400 metres above its summit.

An officer at the Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA), Bambang Sugiono, said the eruption occurred at approximately 11.08am local time.

“The ash column was observed to be white to grey in colour, with thick intensity, drifting towards the southwest, following wind direction,” he said, according to ANTARA News Agency, on Saturday.

He said Mount Dukono, which rises 1,087 metres above sea level, remains at Alert Level II (Waspada), indicating above-normal volcanic activity.

Seismograph records also showed ongoing and periodic volcanic activity.

Bambang warned that eruptions at Mount Dukono are highly fluctuating and may occur at any time, with ash distribution depending on changing wind direction and speed.

He also cautioned that volcanic ash poses health risks, particularly to the respiratory system, urging people in affected areas to wear masks or face coverings.

Mount Dukono erupted twice on Friday, with the first eruption at 11.06am local time, producing an ash column reaching approximately 1,500 metres above the summit, and a later eruption at 5.28pm, with an ash column as high as 4,000 metres above the summit.
