The showroom at Mansion Macalister was opened by chief minister Chow Kon Yeow, who said Malaysia’s transition towards EVs was no longer merely a future discussion but was already taking place rapidly, as reflected by the increasing number of EV registrations.
“Based on the latest data, Malaysia recorded more than 20,000 EV registrations so far in 2026, with close to 5,900 registrations in April alone, double that of a year ago,” said Chow.
He said there are currently 5,619 EV charging bays in Malaysia including 1,898 DC fast chargers; however aspects such as reliability, accessibility, and practicality still need improvement, particularly in urban areas such as Penang.
BYD vice-president Liu Xueliang said the company continues to channel technological innovations and research capabilities into the Malaysian market because of its confidence in Malaysia’s electric future.
