Three routes connecting the airline’s base in Chubu in central Japan to Sapporo, Sendai and Fukuoka are affected.

The airline is offering refunds to affected passengers, with a company spokesman saying it is considering resuming operations after Oct 24.

AirAsia Japan resumed domestic flights last month after grounding its aircraft in April due to the pandemic.

One international route connecting Chubu to Taiwan has been suspended since March.

Despite new cases in Japan trending down in recent weeks, the decision underlines the crisis faced by the airline industry.

In a recent interview with Reuters, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said the company was reviewing its operations in Japan.

“I think Japan is something we have to really think hard about,” he said.

“If we had tons of cash, then it’s something we would probably continue. I think we will have decisions on Japan very soon.”
