PETALING JAYA:
National badminton ace Lee Zii Jia booked his Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games last 16 ticket today after defeating Frenchman Brice Leverdez at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.

The No 8 seed trailed in the opening minutes of the first game but quickly took control.

It was all one-way traffic from then on as he downed his opponent 21-17, 21-5 in 35 minutes.

He tops Group M with two wins after also beating Artem Pochtarov of Ukraine 21-5, 21-11 on Sunday.

The All England champion will face defending champion Chen Long in the last 16 tomorrow for a place in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Zii Jia’s record against the Rio 2016 gold medallist stands at 2-2 but the Alor Setar-born shuttler won their most recent match at the All England last year.

In Brazil five years ago, Chen Long beat favourite Lee Chong Wei in the final to deny Malaysia its first Olympic gold.

This is Zii Jia’s first Olympics while Chen Long was also a bronze medallist at London 2012.
