SINGAPORE:
Seventeen people aged 65 to 101 died of complications linked to Covid-19 here yesterday, the Singapore health ministry reported.

All the dead had underlying medical conditions, the ministry said, without giving any further details. It is also the second-highest single-day record of deaths since the 18 reported on Oct 20.

The new deaths take the cumulative number of fatalities in Singapore to 540.

The health ministry also reported 3,481 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, a slight increase from 3,397 on Tuesday. The total number of cases in Singapore now stands at 227,681.

“The news cases included 3,244 in the community, 506 of whom are senior citizens aged 60 and above,” the Straits Times reported.

The remaining number of new cases comprised 229 in migrant worker dormitories and eight imported.

The infection rate (R0, or R-naught) in Singapore has also risen slightly to 0.88, from 0.82 on Tuesday, according to the health ministry.

The overall utilisation rate of the ICU is at 71%, down from 72.4% the day before.

Singapore extended some of its social curbs last week to contain the spread of Covid-19 for around a month in order to ease the pressure on the healthcare system.

About 85% of Singapore’s population have been vaccinated against the virus, with 86% having received at least one dose, while 19% have received boosters.
