PETALING JAYA:
It’s no secret that the culinary offerings of Malaysia, as tasty as they are, are not particularly healthy.

As waistlines expand, a growing number of restaurants and cafés have started touting their own versions of health food, albeit at prices only a few can afford.

Hence, Ours Eatery in Damansara Utama trained its guns on offering clean, fresh and healthy food at reasonable prices.

Located in the quiet neighbourhood of Damansara Kim, Ours Eatery was initially based in Damansara City Mall until about a month ago when it relocated here.

A rather small dining establishment, it has the seating capacity of about ten, but do not let appearances deceive.

For behind the simple furnishings, Ours has much more to offer than one might think; with dishes that are just as tasty as they are colourful.

In addition, nothing on the menu is fried; everything is either steamed or oven-baked.

Their most popular and unique dish is the Ours Nasi Lemak Series, a truly unique take on Malaysia’s national dish.

Instead of fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk, Ours offers the healthier alternatives of cauliflower rice, brown rice or oatmeal.

Likewise, the chicken accompanying the nasi lemak alternative comes in two different flavours, basil or torikatzu.

Surprisingly, the oatmeal alternative has a distinctive, squishy and chewy taste that expertly complements the sambal on the side.

Same goes for the cauliflower version, which is a far cry from the usual rice locals are used to.

To wash it all down, Ours serves its patrons with sweet pandan drinks, a cooling beverage for a hot day.

A surprisingly filling dish, consider sharing the Hot Wrap with a partner.

For those with a craving for burritos, consider a Hot Wrap, stuffed with vegetables, chicken and your choice of healthy toppings.

The size of one half of the Wrap is actually rather immense, so expect to be stuffed by the time you finish the entire plate.

A Mexican-inspired menu item, the crust is a tasty treat as is the filling inside.

There are also quesadillas on the menu, with a crispy crust wrapped around the chicken, cheese, corn and onion inside.

Fans of Italian food should also consider ordering the Ours Chicken Aglio Pasta, a recent addition to the menu.

The Ours Chicken Aglio Pasta will satisfy the taste buds of any Italian food aficionado.

Made with baby tomatoes, garlic, cheddar, salt and pepper, the pasta is a delicious and filling dish.

In an interesting twist on traditional Chinese soups, Ours Eatery offers its patrons the Ours Healthy Soup, which has a generous helping of kampung chicken, green papaya, goji seeds and dates floating in fresh coconut water.

The Ours Healthy Soup is an interesting spin on traditional Chinese soups, with the use of green papaya and coconut water.

Served hot, it is refreshing despite the oddness of having papaya and not the usual old cucumber in it.

Ready for a Cold Wrap? This comes with fruit, particularly jackfruit as well as vegetables wrapped in a thin chewy skin. Be sure to scoop generous amounts of applesauce as you eat the wrap to further enhance its taste.

For those with a sweet tooth, Ours Eatery has desserts that are just as healthy as they are savoury; with brownies made of black beans and banana bread made with coconut oil, oat flour and bananas.

You can eat these desserts without an ounce of guilt as they are prepared without a pinch of refined white sugar.

“I am very passionate about food,” said Jackie Leong Lai Yin, founder of Ours Eatery. “I love to eat and eating is something that everyone needs to do…You need to feed yourself well.”

Coming from a family involved in the sauce manufacturing industry, Leong was pushed to come up with healthy food as her elderly parents began to experience health problems.

Instead of just cooking healthy food for them, she decided to teach them how to instead.

The food of Ours Eatery, she said, is based on traditional recipes and uses the freshest of ingredients with no preservatives either in the preparation or cooking process.

For example, the chilli used in their dishes are ground by the kitchen staff themselves while the sauces are made from raw ingredients as well.

“Perception-wise, people think eating healthy means eating greens, lots of vegetables with no taste. That is not eating, you’re just surviving. We want people to enjoy the food.”

Ours Eatery, as the name suggests, is for everyone, she quips. “We don’t want you to come only once, we want you to make us your regular.”

As the lunch crowd streams in with plastic containers in hand, it is safe to say that Ours Eatery is well on its way to accomplishing its goal of providing Malaysians with cheap but healthy and delicious meals.
