Orrest Head is a hill 238.9 metres above sea level at Windermere town. If the weather is fine just before or on the day of your hike, considered yourself blessed. But if it’s been raining, be prepared for some serious cold and humidity.
While some say hiking to Orrest Head is a piece of cake, others say it can be tiring but that the views once you’ve reached the peak make it all worthwhile.
The start of the walk to Orrest Head
Even at the starting point of the hike, you will be blessed at the sight of beautiful trees of many varieties surrounding you. The trail is also paved and the inclination is gradual – always a good way to start a hike.

Midway through the walk
Halfway through the walk, you’ll find that the trail is no longer paved and if it had been raining the day before, it will most likely be muddy too.
Sneakers will not do so make sure who have on proper footwear – hiking shoes, as it can get quite slippery at times.
If you’re tired, you can stop and take a breather on one of the many benches thoughtfully located along the way.

Orrest Head – conquered!
After walking for close to one hour, the peak will soon be within reach. An indicator that you are nearing your goal is a gate with a stone placed by the inhabitants of Windermere in 1902.
In mere minutes, you will find yourself at the peak of Orrest Head.

The descend
Do take some photos of the spectacular views here before descending. Don’t be surprised if the cold weather coupled with the activity to hiking up an incline make you extremely hungry.
Once back in Windermere town, there are restaurants and cafes aplenty to grab a bite – so eat your heart out.

Before bidding adieu to Windermere town for good, why not head to the post office where you can send some pretty postcards to friends and family – the old-fashioned way.
Then it’s good-bye Windermere and beautiful Orrest Head.
