For many people, grabbing a burger means stopping at their neighbourhood Ramly Burger roadside stall, and ordering either a chicken or beef patty, grilled right before their eyes.
These burgers are delicious and a pretty hearty meal in itself as you can also ask for the “special” that comes with cheese or a fried egg encasing the patty or both, besides the usual slices of tomato and shredded cabbage, all drenched in excessive amounts of chili sauce and mayo.
For those with more superior tastes or who wish to treat themselves to a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant yet still want to bite down on a classic burger instead of a steak, there’s TGI Fridays or maybe even Hard Rock Café.
Spade’s Burger
The burger scene in Malaysia has experienced a revolution of sorts in the last few years, starting with MyBurgerLab’s charcoal buns that were a real novelty.
Today, it’s easy to find a fancy burger outlet at almost every hipster joint across the country, offering their own interpretation of how this American invention should look and taste.
Many burger brands have come and gone, but a few have stood the test of time and remain to this day, having proven that theirs is the real deal.
One such brand is Spade’s Burger, founded back in 2013 in Penang. This review is based on their SS15, Subang Jaya outlet in Selangor.
First off, it’s important to mention that Spade’s Burger is non-halal. It offers a choice of pork, chicken, or beef as your choice of patty.
There’s also salmon for those who prefer something lighter and mushroom patty options for vegetarians.

Spade’s Dark Knight burger with pork, and BBJ burger with beef cost from RM10.90 to RM17.50. You can also order the combo that comes with unlimited refills for drinks and certain sides.
The sides include fried bacon strips, salted-egg fish skin, and mushroom wedges.

The pork patty in Dark Night was flavourful, moist and a perfect substitute for the more conventional options of chicken and beef. The burger came with bacon bits and cheese crisps.
The BBJ burger, while very good in itself, may perhaps be a tad too sweet for some.
Overall though, both burger choices were way above average, thoroughly satisfying to eat and worth every buck.

As for the sides, the salted-egg fish skin and mushroom wedges were on point. However, the deep-fried bacon strips were sliced too thin and breaded too heavily to allow the natural flavour of bacon to shine. A bit of a shame really.
