In Malaysia, students by the thousands who intended to further their studies in various academic disciplines, now face an uncertain future.
Many no longer have the financial means to enrol in universities due to their parents either having to take pay cuts or having lost their jobs.
In their effort to do right by deserving students caught in the turmoil of the pandemic, City University Malaysia (CITYU) is offering a special assistance package called ‘Bantuan Prihatin CITYU’ to students from the ‘Asnaf’ and B40 group.
Through this programme, students enrolling in CITYU’s February 2021 intake need not pay their registration fees in advance.
They will also have the option to apply for a 100% PTPTN loan besides also submitting applications for scholarships from the university.
Lastly, CITYU students are free to apply for financial assistance from third parties such as MARA, Zakat Selangor, Penang Future Foundation and the Malaysia Rubber Council among others.

CITYU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the university was aware of how the full implementation of the National Education Plan had been affected by the pandemic but that they remained positive about getting back on track as long as public and private sectors could collaborate with one another.
He also said, “As an educational entity wholly owned by SELIA Group, one of Malaysia’s leading Bumiputera-owned engineering and construction companies, CITYU has always adhered to the SELIA Group’s aspiration to develop a Bumiputera-owned educational institution that sets new benchmarks in the higher education industry that are in line with the aspirations of the National Education Policy.”
He said it was the university’s belief that the initiative would be able to provide practical and appropriate assistance to eligible students.
“Additionally, in line with our desire to provide more higher education opportunities to Malaysians, all 68 of our programmes across eight faculties will be made easily accessible and affordable,” he said, adding that the university would ensure that the new norm teaching and learning methods implemented will not hinder the quality of their graduates.
“To facilitate online teaching and learning activities particularly during the pandemic, CITYU will be offering free laptops to eligible students,” he said, explaining that most CITYU programmes can be implemented online, or done on a part-time basis.
“Close cooperation with existing industries forged with 50 strategic partners from various fields and industries will be utilised to enable our students to get industrial training placements or part-time work.
“Early exposure to the job market can also increase students’ employability,” he said.
‘Bantuan Prihatin CITYU’ is open to eligible SPM and Diploma graduates. Applications are open for now till Feb 21, 2021.
