The ritual of making a New Year’s resolution to change one’s life for the better is a concept shared by many around the world.
But as good as any plan or goal is, implementing and executing any changes successfully requires determining your to-do list and actually following through with it.
To make things easier, here are eight New Year’s resolutions that will change your life in 2023.
1. Build positive relationships
Cut out toxic people if they only bring negativity to your life. Replace them by reconnecting with friends and family who genuinely only want the best for you, and whom you can count on to be there for you during challenging times.
Go on road trips to visit those who are on the other side of the city, state, or country. Cuddle your significant other and rekindle your romance.
Give out hugs and compliments freely. In short, cheesy as it sounds, aim to build positive relationships that are guided by love.
2. Get healthy
Exercise outdoors as often as possible. If it’s too hot, head out early in the morning or in the evening.
Take a hike, go for walks in a park, or even spend a day walking around your favourite mall – you would be surprised by how many calories you burn! Skip the escalators and elevators and use the stairs instead.
Make sure you get enough quality sleep, then wake up earlier and kick off the day by getting more done before everyone else is up.
Take a few minutes to meditate daily: close your eyes, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Practise mindfulness and being in the present.
3. Cultivate good dietary habits
It’s important to drink enough water daily, so why not have a refillable bottle next to you at all times? Consume less alcohol and caffeine, or better yet, cut them out completely. Cut down on sugary food and drink, and eat more fruits and vegetables.

Learning to cook can be tremendously useful and will help you stay on top of what goes into your meals. Use Youtube or TikTok to find tips, tricks and ideas that you can perfect over time.
4. Self-care and maintenance
To complement your healthy eating, book a full annual physical exam to make sure your body is functioning optimally, and don’t forget to include a visit to the dentist twice annually.
Pamper yourself with the occasional manicure and pedicure at home or with a professional. Splurge on a facial, spa, or massage if your budget allows.
If you feel like you could do with a makeover, something as simple as a new hairstyle can do wonders.
5. Elevate entertainment
Spending too much time on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can be detrimental. So, it’s a good idea to go on a social media break for a few days or weeks.
What could you do instead? Try making a book or movie bucket list, and start reading or watching! Visit an art gallery or catch a live event with some friends. Explore your artsy side by taking a painting or cooking class.
For the social butterflies among you, host a neighbourhood or block party and meet your community.
6. Be environmentally conscious
If you haven’t already done so, cut single-use plastic out of everyday life and do your part for the environment by carrying around a recyclable bag and water bottle.
Repurpose clothing by tailoring a new look or giving them away. Upcycle unused electronics by taking advantage of trade-in programmes or by reselling them on online marketplaces.
Aim to get out more in nature to appreciate its beauty.

7. Strengthen your finances
Money management is a crucial skill that everyone should cultivate. Create or update your annual budget. If you haven’t already done so, start saving and investing for a better future.
Be more aware of the differences between needs and wants, and spend your hard-earned money wisely.
There are many free tutorials and courses online that could enhance your current skills or teach you new ones. Upskilling could subsequently translate into a second income stream.
8. Feed your soul
Just as it’s good to feed your body with healthy food, it’s crucial to feed your soul by doing good things for others, especially the less fortunate.
Donate your unused belongings to those who may need them more. Teach someone a valuable new skill that could elevate their life.
Volunteer your time to improve the lives around you. Orphanages, homes for the disabled and seniors, and pet shelters could always use a helping hand.
Review these resolutions monthly, prioritise them accordingly, and you will be in a much better position than when you started in 2023.
