PETALING JAYA:
Engage in a night of fun and entertainment while supporting a good cause at the upcoming “Refugeastra: Heartstrings for Humanity” charity event.

This concert, held here this weekend to commemorate World Refugee Day on June 20, aims to shed light on the plight of refugees in Malaysia while raising essential funds for their support.

It is organised by a group of dedicated medical students from the Malaysian Medic International Malaysia Branch (MMIM), in collaboration with non-profit organisation Refuge for the Refugees.

“MMIM has a commitment to addressing pressing social issues through local projects and flagship events,” said Refugeastra co-organising chairperson Ethan Hooi Yi Hen. “This year, we chose to spotlight the refugee community, an often overlooked group.

“Our goal is not only to draw attention to their struggles but also to celebrate their resilience and contributions.”

“Refugeastra” will feature 12 lively performances, showcasing the talents of both university students and refugees. Prepare to be entertained with music, dance, and more from performers Angellisa, the Astar dance society, the Catholic High School band, Cincai Band, UM Diabolo, Jelyn, Kua Yue, Lip Lue, Lovevvu, the Lisu Refugee Community, and Xin Ying.

Dr Hanis Saadah Husin, a family-medicine specialist from The Red Clinic, will also share insights into refugee health programmes initiated by the clinic, and highlight the crucial role of healthcare in supporting displaced communities.

According to Refugeastra co-organising chairperson Suzanne Pok, this concert will also serve as a platform for refugees to display their talent.

“We hope to form a different perception of refugees among the public and foster empathy from the community towards them. Please be reminded that they, too, are beautiful and talented human beings just like every one of us, who deserve compassion and support,” Pok said.

All proceeds from ticket sales will go towards Refuge for the Refugees and the Kachin Refugee Centre. Each ticket holder will also receive a complimentary goodie bag.

Both Hooi and Pok believe many refugees still suffer from social stigma within their local communities, making it important to encourage inclusiveness and diversity.

“In addition to providing monetary support to the refugees, we hope this concert will also contribute to long-term positive change in how they are perceived and treated in our society,” Pok concluded.
