KUANTAN:
It might begin with a simple errand – a trip to the grocery store, a ride to the airport, or help with paperwork.

But for many of Nor Anisah Abdullah’s clients, what they are really looking for is something less tangible: reassurance, companionship, and someone they can trust.

The 29-year-old Kuantan native has found herself at the heart of a growing demand for “runner” services, driven by increasingly busy schedules and the realities of modern life.

Yet her work goes far beyond delivering items from one place to another. “I realised that many people, especially women and the elderly, struggle to get immediate help for everyday tasks,” she said.

That realisation nudged her to step in not just as a service provider, but as a reliable presence in people’s lives.

Her day-to-day work is varied and often unpredictable. She might be accompanying someone to a hospital appointment, helping with shopping, handling documents, or sending children to tuition classes. She also provides childcare when needed.

But it is the quieter moments that matter more. “Recently, a woman asked me to accompany her to a hospital appointment. I handled everything – pushing her wheelchair, staying with her during the consultation, and helping to buy food,” Anisah recalled.

“Sometimes, they just need someone to be there. Not everything can be done alone.”

That sense of presence has made her more than just a runner. As a mother herself, Anisah understands the emotional weight many of her clients carry. She often becomes a listener, especially for women who simply need someone to talk to.

“There are also clients who ask me to send them to KLIA from Kuantan,” she shared. “I do it to help and to earn additional income.”

While her earnings vary depending on the job, on average, she brings in a few hundred ringgit a day. Work often begins as early as 7am and can stretch late into the evening.

But Anisah is grateful for the demand and flexibility: “It allows me to spend more time with my daughter while helping to support our small family’s finances,” she said.

Still, being a runner comes with risks. She is careful about the requests she accepts, prioritising safety above all else.

“The first thing I check is the location – that it is not isolated or secluded. Then I verify the client’s identity, as I only accept bookings from women.”

Notably, she pointed out: “There have been cases where men tried to deceive me by making bookings.”

Maintaining trust and punctuality are also important. “I believe services like this are truly needed, especially in urban areas. Demand is increasing, particularly among working individuals and the elderly.”

Once clients feel comfortable, they often recommend her to others – a testament to the trust she has built.

Looking ahead, Anisah hopes more people will begin to see runner services not just as a side hustle but as a meaningful profession.

“Although it may seem like a small service, its impact is significant for those in need,” she concluded.
