PETALING JAYA:
To many Malaysians, Adzrin Azhar is better known as “Cikgu Rotan”, the lively vocal coach whose entertaining singing tips and practice sessions have built her a growing online following.

But away from the camera, the singer has been quietly fighting a far more personal battle.

The 41-year-old, who rose to fame with her 2010 hit “Pujaan Malaya”, revealed that the cancer she once thought she had overcome returned last year, and has spread to her liver and right breast.

Despite undergoing treatment, Adzrin continues to teach vocal classes almost every day – a task she loves, and which she credits for helping her stay strong.

“I love my students. Working with them makes me happy and keeps me from feeling stressed,” she told FMT.

“For cancer patients, protecting your emotions is very important. I don’t have time for toxic things.”

Adzrin, a mother of twins, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015 before being declared cancer-free in 2020.

When the cancer returned in May last year, she made the conscious decision not to retreat from the work and people she loved. Instead, her home-based vocal classes became a source of comfort and purpose.

“My schedule is packed. I teach five classes a day,” she revealed, adding that the demand for vocal lessons is “very high”.

Adzrin, who found fame with her song ‘Pujaan Malaya’, has been teaching vocals for the past 15 years.

Her students come from all walks of life, including schoolchildren, bankers, civil servants, artistes and aspiring singers.

“I teach nasyid, choir singing and choral speaking. I also coach experienced artistes as well as new talents who are preparing for competitions,” she said.

Among them are Audra and Ammara from the reality series “Talk To My Manager”, Ray-D from pop group Alpha, and several contestants from Gimme The Mic Malaysia 2024.

Sharing a recent success story, Adzrin highlighted that Ray-D has ventured abroad to further his music career.

“He has gone to Korea, while I’m still comfortably driving my Axia to Nilai,” she joked, adding that she is blessed to share in her students’ successes.

Online, Adzrin’s “Cikgu Rotan” persona is known for her relaxed and humorous take on vocal coaching.

“My twins said, ‘People want to know how singers scream’ – and that’s where the idea came from,” she shared with a laugh.

Adzrin says she has accepted that her cancer has returned, but refuses to surrender to it.

Besides vocal tips, she uploads snippets of practice sessions with her students – something rarely seen on social media.

On Teachers’ Day today, Adzrin hopes Malaysians will learn to appreciate anyone who shares knowledge, regardless of profession or background.

“Anyone who teaches us something is a teacher. A security guard can also be a teacher,” she said.

“Appreciate teachers no matter who they are. Happy Teachers’ Day.”
