Here’s our roundup of films hitting the big screen this month.
‘Masters of the Universe’ (June 4)
After years in development, the live-action “Masters of the Universe” finally arrives in cinemas!
Based on the iconic Mattel franchise that dominated the 1980s, the film follows Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), who crash-lands on Earth as a child and grows up unaware of his true destiny.
Years later, he discovers the legendary Power Sword and returns to Eternia, now ruled by the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto). Alongside allies like Teela (Camila Mendes) and Man-at-Arms (Idris Elba), Adam must embrace his role as He-Man to save the universe.
Expect plenty of action, fantasy adventure, and self-aware humour.
‘Power Ballad’ (June 4)
If you’re a fan of big-screen musical releases à la “Michael“, this just might be the next must-see on your list.
Directed by acclaimed Irish filmmaker John Carney, “Power Ballad” stars Paul Rudd as Rick Power, a struggling wedding singer in Ireland who strikes up a friendship with fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas).
Things, however, quickly turn sour when Danny steals one of Rick’s songs and turns it into a global hit. What follows is Rick’s chaotic attempt to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves.
‘5 Bomoh’ (June 4)
Khairy Jamaluddin is officially entering the movie world! The former politician turned podcaster makes his feature film debut in this satirical local comedy directed by Syed Fariz.
Poking fun at superstition culture in Malaysia, Aaron Aziz stars as a father so desperate for his daughter to score straight As in her SPM exams that he drags his family across the country searching for powerful bomohs.
Instead, they encounter one ridiculous scammer after another. Absurd, chaotic and hilarious, this might end up being one of the month’s most talked-about local releases.
‘Disclosure Day’ (June 11)
Steven Spielberg is diving back into alien territory with “Disclosure Day”, his first major extraterrestrial sci-fi thriller since 2005’s “War of the Worlds’”
Emily Blunt plays a weather presenter who suddenly begins communicating in strange alien clicks during a live broadcast. Elsewhere, a cybersecurity officer (Josh O’Connor) realises he can somehow understand her.
The pair soon uncovers secrets about extraterrestrial life, while government agencies scramble to silence them.
The inter-stellar cast also includes Colin Firth and Colman Domingo.
‘Toy Story 5’ (June 19)
Pixar’s toys are once again facing an existential crisis – and this time, the enemy is technology!
Eight-year-old Bonnie becomes obsessed with a tablet-like gadget called Lilypad, leaving Jessie, Buzz and the gang struggling to stay relevant. Jessie, now leading the toy room, eventually calls Woody back for help.
Somehow, nearly 30 years, Pixar still keeps finding emotional ways to make these cherished playthings question their purpose in life.
Directed by “Finding Nemo” filmmaker Andrew Stanton, the sequel adds Conan O’Brien and Bad Bunny to the voice cast.
‘Poovellaam Kettuppaar’ (June 25)
After making history with “C4 Cinta” – the highest-grossing Malaysian Tamil film – director Karthik Shaamalan returns with “Poovellaam Kettuppaar”.
The psychological thriller stars local talents Magen Vikadakavi, KS Maniam and Shaila Nair. It’s also the first Malaysian Tamil film shot entirely in anamorphic format (we didn’t know what that meant, either).
Beyond the visuals, the film explores themes of illusion, truth, and the fragility of the human mind.
‘Supergirl’ (June 26)
Superman’s cousin finally steps into the spotlight, following her brief introduction in last year’s “Superman”. After witnessing Krypton’s destruction and surviving alone in space for years, Kara Zor-El grows into a far more hardened hero than Clark Kent.
Here, Kara teams up with young alien girl Ruthye Marye Knoll, who is hunting the intergalactic criminal Krem of the Yellow Hills after he murdered her father.
When Krem also injures Kara’s beloved dog Krypto, the mission becomes deeply personal – and who can blame her?
“Supergirl” also marks Jason Momoa’s debut as bounty hunter Lobo in the new DC Universe, so expect things to get wild!
Also out this month but alas, kena banned: ‘Scary Movie 6’
This horror-movie spoof franchise is back from the dead, with original creators the Wayans brothers writing the screenplay.
Anna Faris and Regina Hall reunite as Cindy and Brenda for another round of ridiculous parody, this time taking aim at films like “M3GAN”, “Smile” and “The Substance”. And somehow, Ghostface still cannot catch a break.
Unfortunately, Malaysian fans will have to find other ways to see if this instalment recaptures the franchise’s chaotic early-2000s magic: “Scary Movie 6” is much too scary for the Film Censorship Board and apparently will not be screened in local theatres.
