However, Klang’s variety of culinary delights also extends to other cuisines such as Malay, Indian, and even Thai.
If you’re hankering for good Malay food, drop by Seri Melayu Heritage Restaurant. The eatery is located in the residential area of Taman Chi Liung and is close enough to the Klang Commuter station.

Inside, the restaurant is cosy, neat, and comfortable with air-conditioning. A certificate displayed at the counter reveals that the eatery won a cleanliness competition for its premises that was organised by the Klang Municipal Council in 2019. During a recent visit for lunch, FMT sampled some of the crowd’s favourites.
Tasting notes

The asam pedas, a popular dish among Malaysians, is said to be the highlight here. As its name denotes, the flavourful broth is both sour and spicy – making it ideal to be enjoyed on days when it is cold outside.
The pomfret is served with white rice, salted egg, and piquant sambal belacan – good news for those who would like to take this dish up a fiery notch!

Although ayam penyet is part of Indonesian cuisine, it has become popular among Malaysians and this dish is done right here.
Fun fact: it is said that ayam penyet – which means “smashed fried chicken” in Javanese – derives its name from the fact that the chicken is literally pounded to make the meat softer.
Here, the fried chicken has a crispy and flavourful outer layer but is tender and tasty inside. The sambal is also another highlight as the spicy condiment provides a nice kick to the meal. When paired with white rice, fried tofu, and tempeh, the combination is simple yet delicious.

The pulut kuning, a dish typically enjoyed during special occasions such as weddings and engagements in the Malay community, also gets the thumbs-up.
The glutinous rice, which owes its yellow hue to turmeric, is served with curry chicken and a boiled egg. The rice is sticky yet soft, and best enjoyed with lashings of the flavourful and thick gravy.
Meanwhile, for those who want to enjoy something less filing, the roti jala – known as lace pancakes – is a scrumptious option. Also served with a bowl of curry chicken and a boiled egg, the roti jala is soft and tasty.
And although they are delightful when dipped into the creamy curry, they are just as delicious on their own. Enjoy the dish with a hot cup of kopi ‘o’ or teh tarik for a truly Malaysian gastronomic experience.
Other items on the menu include gulai lemak daging salai (smoked beef cooked in coconut milk), nasi ulam (mixed herbs rice), and nasi lemak. The establishment’s menu is extensive as it includes non-Malay cuisine as well – so have a go at their version of hokkien mee, Chinese fried rice, and a selection of pasta.

To end your meal, cendol, a favourite Malaysian dessert, is always a sweet option. The bowl of shaved ice is topped with a generous amount of coconut milk, palm sugar, pandan jelly, and red beans – and each refreshing spoonful is best enjoyed slowly.
Other desserts on the menu include sago gula Melaka and banana fritters with ice cream, so go ahead, indulge, and satisfy your sugar cravings.
