Located on the first floor of a shop lot, it is hard not to feel an instant sense of calm as this cosy nook is filled with greenery and awash with sunlight streaming in through the skylight.
Opened in May this year, Taman Hati is more than just a café – there are plants on sale here too and it is home to three rescue cats. But the inviting aroma of brewing coffee is undoubtedly in the air, and the good music playing in the background will make you want to sit right down and order a cuppa while you immerse yourself in your newfound serenity.
This resounds with the vision that founder Jan Zainal has for the place. “I hope that customers would leave feeling happier and less stressed,” she said.
During a recent visit, FMT learned more about plants, met three interesting felines, and sampled some scrumptious highlights on the menu.
The green space
Taking the team through the area where the plants are displayed, Jan shared: “When I was growing up, my grandmother was always gardening so naturally, I took an interest in it. I chose the name “Taman Hati” because my heart is in my garden.”
Among the plants available for purchase are the butterfly plant or “Oxalis Triangularis”, the exotic Monstera Thai Constellation, hibiscus, anthurium, and various cacti.

Additionally, Jan also conducts workshops such as “Plant Parenthood” that deals with the basics of gardening, and “Little Botanist” for kids.
The cats
However, one irresistible highlight of the place is its three resident cats: Biggie Smalls, Jenny-One-Eye, and Se7en – all rescued cats who have now found their forever home here.
In a true “tail” with a happy ending, Jan shared that she adopted Jenny after the cat was involved in an accident and lost one eye. Similarly, Biggie had his tail amputated after an accident and Jan, who initially fostered him, decided to keep him after he charmed his way into her heart.
“Se7en, on the other hand, found me. I was coming out of the car when she jumped on me and then followed me. That was it,” Jan shared with a laugh.
“They are celebrities here. In fact, we have customers who come in and immediately ask about the trio.”
During FMT’s visit, the two girls were resting at the back, while Biggie was happily sauntering around the place, stopping by tables for pats and cuddles, and purring loudly when indulged.
Jan revealed that just like his name, he has a big personality and enjoys being around humans. In fact, he even has a soft-serve ice cream named after him – “Ais Ais Biggie”.
The food and beverage

The chicken pie here has a delicious buttery crust and flavourful chicken filling. Served with a side of greens topped with Italian dressing, this is what comfort food is all about. Other alternatives include beef pie and croissants.
Additionally, the quintessential Malaysian breakfast of half-boiled eggs and toast is also available until noon. However, Jan said they aren’t too rigid with the timing– so if you feel like having breakfast for lunch or tea, go ahead and ask!

The carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, Jan revealed, is a bestseller. Just one bite will explain why – the cake is super moist and isn’t too sweet while the walnuts add a pleasant crunch. The apple crumble with rhubarb and brownies are other delightful treats to enjoy with a hot cup of coffee.

If you’re hankering for something cold, try the “ais ais Biggie”. This soft serve ice cream comes drenched with chocolate sauce and a variety of favourite childhood treats – wafers, crushed Oreos, chocolate sprinkles, and cornflakes. Absolutely delicious!

To quench your thirst, do give the iced biscoff latte a go! The delightful concoction is rich, milky, and comes topped with crushed biscoff cookies. Other beverage options include chocolate drinks, refreshing kombuchas, and a selection of teas.
