The beauty of technology is that our tasks and daily lives are made so much simpler and better with the availability of smart televisions, smartphones and laptops.

However, there is a dark side to every good thing, and in this case, it’s the fact that we improperly discard our devices by throwing them into the trash or landfill site when they are irreparable or badly damaged.

Not only does this cause harm to the environment and our health due to the exposure of toxic chemicals from e-waste, but it also causes a lot of money wastage as we keep purchasing devices with shorter life cycles.

Fortunately, there is a solution for this: e-waste recycling!

E-waste recycling is a process of recycling old electronic gadgets and appliances and turning them into new devices, and here are five good reasons as to why you should do it.

1. Conserve landfill space

20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are disposed of worldwide every year. (Pexels pic)

According to a study conducted by the Department of Environment Malaysia, it is estimated that the quantity of e-waste generated by households, businesses and institutions reached 53 million in 2020, 3.5 times higher than in 1995.

Thus, it is crucial to conserve as much landfill space as possible by recycling your unused gadgets instead of throwing them away.

2. Protect the environment and wildlife

Electronic products and their components are made with toxic chemicals including lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium – all of which can endanger our environment, wildlife and health.

Recycling one computer monitor alone can prevent 4 to 8 pounds of lead and other toxic chemicals from ending up in nature, or worse, being harmfully released into the air via burning.

3. Preserve natural resources

Many electronic devices are made up of gold, silver and other precious metals in small amounts.

It is important to conserve our natural resources for future generations and save on manufacturing and energy costs.

4. Give back to the community

Another way to recycle your old devices is to give back to the community by donating your old and unused electronic items to local organisations and charities.

For instance, many charities will pass along your donations to schools or those who are in need of gadgets and access to the Internet. Not only is this method environmentally friendly, but you will also do your part for society.

5. Save money

If you are thinking about buying a new phone, you might consider throwing away your old phone just like that. However, there is a better way to save some cash here.

By trading in your old device in exchange for a new smartphone from your telco provider or an electrical appliances shop, you can actually save more and get the new model you have always wanted at a better price while taking care of Mother Nature!
