The Umno-owned daily, quoting an unnamed source, reported today that a new MB could be sworn-in by the end of the month.
An announcement could be expected within the next two days, and “there is information that the swearing-in will be held at the end of this month at Istana Anak Bukit,” the source was quoted as saying.
It was not possible to confirm the Utusan report.
Ahmad Bashar, who is deputy chairman of Kedah Umno, held a press conference earlier this week to announce that 14 divisional leaders had lost confidence in the leadership of Mukhriz Mahathir as Menteri Besar.
Yesterday, the Kedah Umno leadership, MPs and state assembly members had a meeting with Umno president Najib Razak in Kuala Lumpur.
The move against Mukhriz, youngest son of former premier Mahathir Mohamad, was viewed in political circles as retaliation by Najib for the year-long campaign against him by Mahathir.
Utusan reported that its source said a replacement for Mukhriz was discussed at yesterday’s closed-door 40-minute meeting between Najib and Kedah leaders.
Although Utusan also stated that public support for Mukhriz was waning, Mahathir allies have pointed out that only 54 of the 260 in the Kedah Umno leadership had attended the meeting.
