PETALING JAYA:
The organiser of a Quran reading campaign is willing to meet government authorities to discuss the best way to continue the campaign within the confines of the law.

The Star Online quoted Anas Zubedy, who started the “Let’s Read The Quran” campaign, as saying he welcomed the advice and suggestions of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Home Ministry as he wanted the Quranic verses used in the campaign to be in compliance with existing regulations.

The campaign aims to compile the favourite Quranic verses of prominent Malaysians and to post these on social media in English and Bahasa Melayu for the reading pleasure of all netizens.

Anas said the campaign was a noble initiative that sought to raise awareness about the universal message of the Quran.

“We hope it will not be stopped and welcome any advice and suggestions moving forward,” he said in a statement, adding he was willing to meet the Home Ministry’s Al-Quran Printing, Control and Licensing Board chairman Harussani Zakaria over the matter.

Yesterday, Harussani issued a statement that it would seek to stop the campaign on grounds that writing and reading the Quran in any other language besides Arabic was prohibited.

The Perak Mufti said translations of the Quran without the Arabic text could lead to misunderstanding.
